About the course
Summary
Join us for an immersive advanced training event on dementia research, care, and clinical practice, designed for professionals and researchers seeking a comprehensive understanding of dementia networks. This unique program features expert-led seminar talks by prominent neurologists and researchers, interactive visits to dementia day care centres where participants will engage with non-profit organisation-led palliative care initiatives and volunteer-supported activities, as well as guided tours of cutting-edge research laboratories. Through hands-on experiences and in-depth discussions, participants will gain valuable insights into the integration of clinical practice, community care, and scientific research within a well-coordinated dementia care framework.
Learning outcomes
- Describe how clinical practice, community-based care, volunteer networks, and research infrastructures are integrated within coordinated dementia care frameworks, and evaluate their impact on patient outcomes and translational research.
- Understand the epidemiology, pathogenesis, and progression of major neurodegenerative disorders including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and Multiple Sclerosis.
- Compare key neuropathological features of AD, PD, FTD, MS, and cerebrovascular diseases using histological and imaging data.
- Identify and evaluate emerging biomarkers for Alzheimer’s and related dementias.
- Develop knowledge in administering and interpreting cognitive assessment tools (MMSE, MoCA, ACE-R) including cultural adaptations.
- Practice implementing non-pharmacological interventions such as music therapy, reminiscence, and sensory stimulation.
- Appreciate the contribution of neuropsychology, pastoral psychology, and palliative care in managing dementia across settings.
- Explore genetic counseling considerations in hereditary neurodegenerative disorders.
- Explain the evidence base for nutrition-based prevention strategies and the role of nutritional psychology in brain health.
- Evaluate lifestyle interventions such as physical exercise and vestibular stimulation in MS and dementia rehabilitation.
- Examine the use of digital tools in early detection and accessibility (e.g., DeSign project for Deaf individuals).
- Recognise the value of animal, organoid and induced-pluripotent stem cell models in neurodegeneration research.
- Collaborate across disciplines to create patient-centered care strategies and integrated clinical pathways.
